I had high hopes for this weekend. A quiet weekend at the lake, a few skis, a bit of tubing and a run to the Lac Du Bonnet fair. I knew the weather forecast, I read it, I knew it called for rain, but who could ever have predicted what was in store? I was optimistic and I was WRONG. Friday, we arrived by 7, quick bite and the kiddies, exhausted fell asleep. The rain kept coming all evening. We watched Conan and hoped for better luck the next day. We woke to rain and puddles everywhere. Not even rubber boots can make this day fun to play in (and the fact that their mother forgot raincoats). By 11, the wee ones are stir crazy and in the process driving me crazy. Whining, complaining ensues, you can only imagine. My sweet hubby can sense that I am on the verge of complete meltdown from all the complaining that he dresses in full wet gear, puts both of the big kids (wearing garbage bags, I swore I would never make my kids wear such get ups) in the Chariot and off they go. An hour and a half later, they're back, they've had a great visit with friends down the road and now it's my turn. We ventured into town to find LDB booming, believe it or not, the carnies are still out in full force. The knock off "polar express" still whirls and the screamers are riding the ASTEROID. You can't pay me enough to put my kids on these rides with the gale force winds and pellets of rain. We visit the bakery, the dollar store (where nothing is actually a dollar) and the Bargain store (not really a bargain). Activities and snacks in hand, we're back home. Supper is underway, the rain is pelting, the lake is covered in white caps, the wind literally howling. Salmon is on the barbecue under a make shift tarp and the power flickers and dies. Now the fun begins, no power for an hour and still we manage supper. It returns and I am elated. I am no longer the girl looking for the "back to nature" adventure. I want the satellite, I want the microwave and I want light! Candles and kids don't mix. Our friends are visiting with their very sweet little babe and there is a sound like sheet metal being whipped around outside. A tree has ripped in half and landed on the hood of papa's van. It's actually getting scary, thoughts of the spruce landing on the cabin or worse, a tornado. I have never seen wind or rain like this at the cabin. I turn in at 10:30 after we 4, grandparents and us have sat huddled around the portable DVD player for 2 hours. 4 a.m. -Sadie is screaming and needs a bottle (yes, still gets up once a night, usually later, but once indeed, no lectures, please!) I hit the night light, no light, power can not still be out, can it? Yes, indeedy. My hubby is prepared. I wander out into the living room, hitting every table, door, toy, in my efforts to feel my way in the dark and there in the cabin, in the kitchen, in the moon light, he is heating her bottle on the BBQ. What a man I have!!! We wake 3 hours later to find more rain, more wind and still no power, the adventure is over. Get us out of here, now. 2 hours later, we have packed, travelled and we are HOME SWEET HOME.
I'm sitting at the keyboard howling with laughter since this was almost my exact week-end! Though we didn't bother driving in to LdB since we thought there'd be no way in h3ll the carnival would be on.
